Taking to Twitter, reliable journalist Mike McGrath of The Telegraph has made a midweek West Ham United transfer claim involving Mainz defender Moussa Niakhate.

The Lowdown: West Ham eyeing new defensive additions...

David Moyes has been widely tipped to add to his defensive roster this summer as links emerge various targets, particularly at centre-back.

The likes of Tosin Adarabioyo (Fulham) and James Tarwkoski (Burnley) are just a few names mentioned, with the Bundesliga also emerging as a fruitful source of talented targets.

FC Koln defender Timo Hubers has already entered on to West Ham's transfer radar, with news now coming to light on another German top-flight ace.

The Latest: Moyes eyes bargain Niakhate move...

According to McGrath, as per Twitter, Mainz captain Niakhate is now attracting interest 'from West Ham' and Everton this summer.

Going into further detail in The Telegraph, it is believed that the 26-year-old is on Moyes' personal radar, and Mainz could even green-light his bargain summer sale at just £8m - less than half of his estimated market value.

The Verdict: Get it done?

At just £8m, Niakhate would come as a very shrewd backup option for Moyes at the very least, especially considering that he has averaged more interceptions per 90 (1.9) than any West Ham player this season, as per WhoScored.

Standing at a colossal 6 foot 2, he could adapt well to the physicality of Premier League football, with his bargain transfer fee also making more room in GSB's transfer kitty to invest in a marquee striker signing.

At the very least, a move should be strongly considered by Moyes and West Ham.
