# West Ham United: Agreement with Rennes for Nayef Aguerd ‘is nearing’

**[West Ham United](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/west-ham-news/) are ‘continuing to hold talks’ with Rennes over the signing of defender Nayef Aguerd, reports 90min journalist Toby Cudworth.**

### **The Lowdown: Moyes wants a defender**

David Moyes is [keen to bring a fresh centre-back](https://www.hammers.news/analysis/west-ham-summer-transfer-window-how-many-signings-and-what-positions-for-david-moyes/) to the Hammers this summer, after his squad suffered from a series of injuries in the position throughout the 2021/22 campaign.

Most notably, [Angelo Ogbonna](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/angelo-ogbonna/verletzungen/spieler/48002) sustained a cruciate ligament rupture back in November, which rendered him out of action until the end of the season.

Kurt Zouma and Issa Diop also spent time on the treatment table; at one point, [Craig Dawson was the only senior centre-back available](https://www.90min.com/posts/west-ham-holding-talks-with-rennes-for-nayef-aguerd) for selection.

### **The Verdict: Shrewd signing**

The French media previously claimed that Aguerd was the [“real boss”](https://twitter.com/MohamedTERParis/status/1490383860902678531) at Rennes, while the Ligue 1 club’s former manager Julien Stephen said that the player is a [“cerebral person”](https://www.tellerreport.com/sports/2020-09-19-why-nayef-aguerd-already-has-all-the-right-things-for-stade-rennais.BkiZqUv7HD.html) – illustrating how highly thought of he is in France.

Averaging[four clearances a game](https://www.whoscored.com/Teams/313/Show/France-Rennes) in the French top-flight and ranking in the [93rd percentile for assists as a centre-half](https://fbref.com/en/players/288e1e13/Nayef-Aguerd), the 26-year-old clearly has the talent to make the switch to the [Premier League.](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/premier-league-news/)

With [The Guardian](https://www.theguardian.com/football/2022/may/12/west-ham-working-to-sign-rennes-defender-nayef-aguerd?CMP=share_btn_tw) reporting a fee around the £20m mark, Moyes could be making a shrewd signing in Aguerd.
