# West Ham United: Gary O’Neil calls on club to fire Manuel Pellegrini after Crystal Palace defeat

**Former West Ham United midfielder Gary O’Neil has urged the club to call time on Manuel Pellegrini’s reign as Hammers boss following their defeat to Crystal Palace on Boxing Day.**

Jordan Ayew scored a [spectacular late winner](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/50847260) to condemn Pellegrini’s side to a [ninth defeat in 13 games](https://uk.soccerway.com/teams/england/west-ham-united-fc/684/matches/) in all competitions – which leaves the club [a point above the drop zone](https://www.skysports.com/premier-league-table) with a game in hand.

West Ham face the daunting task of hosting an albeit out-of-form Leicester City later tonight, though they have not won at home for over [three months](https://uk.soccerway.com/teams/england/west-ham-united-fc/684/matches/).

Speaking on [TalkSPORT](https://twitter.com/talkSPORT/status/1210506036538421250), O’Neil feels that things will not get better under the Chilean – and has called on those higher up to take the decision of firing the 66-year-old.

He said: “I don’t see any way of solving it with Pellegrini in charge. I’ve said this before: he’s come up with a few results in the last few weeks that have saved him, but it just seems he follows a good one with two or three bad ones, and I don’t think it can continue.”

It is difficult to provide an alternative course of action for West Ham given the length of time their form has been so unpleasant.

The Hammers’ recent results can surely no longer be classed as a blip, so therefore a more drastic change may be required to save the club from getting dragged into a relegation battle which they may well already be a part of.

That may be surprising given their [top-half finish](https://www.skysports.com/premier-league-table/2018) under Pellegrini last term, their [£71.7m outlay on new players](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/west-ham-united/transfers/verein/379) in the summer and their promising start to the current campaign, which had seen them lie in the [European qualifying spots](https://www.premierleague.com/tables?co=1&se=274&ha=-1) as recently as September.

Any hopes of a revival after their win at Southampton were shot down by Palace’s comeback victory, and with things not improving over the last few months, it may not be surprising if the owners’ patience runs out and O’Neil gets his wish in the coming weeks.
