# West Ham United: GSB now hopeful of reaching agreement to sign Hwang Hee-chan

**According to a claim by transfer insider Dean Jones, writing for [Eurosport](https://www.eurosport.com/football/transfers/2020-2021/west-ham-transfer-news-hwang-hee-chan-is-west-ham-s-last-hope-jesse-lingard-s-15m-chance_sto8088441/story.shtml), West Ham United are now hopeful of reaching an agreement with RB Leipzig to sign striker Hwang Hee-chan this month – but the Hammers also face stiff competition from Mainz for his signature.**

Since transferring to Leipzig from sister club Red Bull Salzburg last summer, Hwang has found opportunities limited – playing just 136 Bundesliga minutes so far this season ([WhoScored](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/262854/Show/Hee-Chan-Hwang)).

### West Ham hopeful of Hwang agreement

West Ham United are apparently still trying to sign a forward behind the scenes ([Eurosport](https://www.eurosport.com/football/transfers/2020-2021/west-ham-transfer-news-hwang-hee-chan-is-west-ham-s-last-hope-jesse-lingard-s-15m-chance_sto8088441/story.shtml)), despite the fact manager David Moyes said on Friday afternoon that he didn’t expect anyone else to come in ‘at the moment’ ([football.london](https://www.football.london/west-ham-united-fc/news/west-ham-liverpool-lingard-transfers-19728900)).

Now, ‘[transfer insider](https://twitter.com/deanjonesbr?lang=en)‘ Jones has claimed that Hwang could be the Irons’ last chance to sign a striker before the window deadline on February 1 – but Hammers supporters could take encouragement from his claim they are ‘[hopeful](https://www.football.london/west-ham-united-fc/news/west-ham-liverpool-lingard-transfers-19728900)‘ an agreement can be reached.

It is said that Leipzig are looking for a temporary club to help him rediscover his form, while West Ham believe he can play very ‘similar’ to striker Michail Antonio ([Eurosport](https://www.eurosport.com/football/transfers/2020-2021/west-ham-transfer-news-hwang-hee-chan-is-west-ham-s-last-hope-jesse-lingard-s-15m-chance_sto8088441/story.shtml)) and some have hinted he could follow the same path as Antonio by developing under Moyes ([Green Street Hammers](https://greenstreethammers.com/2021/01/27/west-ham-hwang-hee-chan-interest/)).

### Transfer Tavern take

Despite [confirming](https://www.whufc.com/news/articles/2021/january/29-january/west-ham-united-sign-england-international-jesse-lingard-loan#:~:text=West%20Ham%20United%20are%20pleased,Cup%20and%20UEFA%20Europa%20League.) the signing of Jesse Lingard, on loan from Man United, the club debatably still need to find a replacement for club record acquisition Sebastien Haller after his departure in early January.

Lingard can play in a variety of attacking positions [according to Moyes](https://www.football.london/west-ham-united-fc/news/west-ham-liverpool-lingard-transfers-19728900), but this news West Ham still aren’t resting in their pursuit for Hwang and a back up striker is encouraging.
