# West Ham United: Hammers in talks with Watford over a potential move for Craig Dawson

**West Ham United have [entered into talks](https://www.footballinsider247.com/sources-west-ham-in-talks-to-sign-englishman-deal-may-finalise-after-tonight/) with Championship side Watford over a potential move for Craig Dawson, after progress was made on transfer deadline day.**

The Hammers had been looking to add to their defensive options throughout the European transfer window, and they had been close to a late move for Chelsea’s Fikayo Tomori, but that move was halted after the 22-year-old called it off at the last second, as per [Sky Sports](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11095/12091271/chelsea-defender-fikayo-tomori-calls-off-west-ham-loan).

David Moyes could be set to turn his attentions toward Dawson as a result, with the Hammers having made progress with talks between themselves and Watford on Monday, according to [Football Insider](https://www.footballinsider247.com/sources-west-ham-in-talks-to-sign-englishman-deal-may-finalise-after-tonight/). Any move for the 30-year-old defender could be completed up until the domestic deadline on October 16th.

Dawson is an experienced defender and does have the versatility of being able to play at both right-back and centre-back, and he made 29 Premier League appearances for Watford last season in which he averaged 1.2 interceptions and one tackle per game, as per [Sofascore](https://www.sofascore.com/player/craig-dawson/50027).

However, he has so far not made an appearance for Watford in the Championship this season, with his only action coming in a single game in the Carabao Cup.

Going from what would have been an exciting addition of Tomori to bringing in Dawson is a big shift, and that makes you question whether there is a real strategy in place from the club’s board in terms of their transfer policy and the setting of targets.

Dawson is a dependable player and he has experience, but he was part of a poor Watford defence last term and only recorded four clean sheets. He was also guilty of giving the ball away a lot, averaging 8.3 possession losses per match last term (via [Sofascore](https://www.sofascore.com/player/craig-dawson/50027)). So, this feels like it could be a potential mistake.
