# Rangers: Noel Whelan sceptical over Alfredo Morelos contract reports

**Noel Whelan has expressed scepticism at reports that [Alfredo Morelos](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/rangers-fc-transfer-rumours/glasgow-rangers-reject-morelos-offer/) is seeking a new contract at Glasgow Rangers.**

### **Whelan discusses Alfredo Morelos situation**

It is somewhat surprising that Morelos is still a Rangers player. Throughout the summer, there was constant speculation surrounding his future, with him even [reportedly agreeing personal terms](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/rangers-fc-transfer-rumours/glasgow-rangers-alfredo-morelos-reportedly-agrees-to-join-ligue-1-side-lille/) with Ligue 1 side Lille. However, he ultimately stayed at Ibrox for the foreseeable future.

[Football Insider](https://www.footballinsider247.com/morelos-wants-new-rangers-contract/) revealed last week that Morelos’ representatives were looking for an improved contract with the ‘Gers. Speaking to the [same publication](https://www.footballinsider247.com/fiasco-exclusive-whelan-reacts-to-unexpected-rangers-morelos-update/) about this move, Whelan was not fully convinced. He explained:

> *“Look, he is already under contract.*
>
> *“You have to stand by a contract when you sign it.*
>
> *“They will only give him a new contract if he is committed to the club. No more of this looking for a transfer move.*
>
> *“He needs to be fully committed to the cause.* *Steven Gerrard only wants players who are fully committed to playing for Glasgow Rangers. That is all that the fans want to see.*
>
> *“Now, he needs to go out there this season and prove himself after the fiasco during the summer regarding an exit.*
>
> *“There is still a lot of trust that needs to be established, starting with a performance against Celtic.”*

### Alfredo Morelos must prove he wants to stay at Rangers

When Morelos is at his best, Rangers do not have a better strike. After all, he has [82](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/alfredo-morelos/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/338962) goals in 149 games for the 54-time Scottish champions, proving himself to be a deadly finisher. However, there may be questions over his commitment to the Ibrox club given the speculation over his future.

\[freshpress-poll id=”330619″\]

He has already [spoken out](https://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/alfredo-morelos-insists-focus-sweating-22412985) about his desire to move to a more prestigious league, whilst he was left out of the starting line-up in [three consecutive league matches](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/alfredo-morelos/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/338962/plus/0?saison=2020&verein=&liga=&wettbewerb=&pos=&trainer_id=) by Steven Gerrard. It seems that talk of a move turned his head, and that speculation is unlikely to disappear, even with a new contract.

Can the ‘Gers really justify a bigger financial outlay for a player who may be on the move anyway? As Whelan says, it is up to Morelos to prove that he is still an important player for Gerrard.
