Doncaster Rovers: McCann must bite the bullet and cash in on Marquis this summer

Having enjoyed a thrilling debut campaign in charge of Doncaster Rovers, Grant McCann now faces a huge summer which could end up defining his side’s fortunes over the coming years.

Whereas the 39-year-old already has a solid squad of players at his disposal at the Keepmoat Stadium, in order to build the foundations needed to succeed in the third tier next season, he will have to get his recruitment spot on over the next few months.

Yet in order to bring in some quality additions in the transfer market, McCann may first have to bite the bullet and cash in on John Marquis.

Although the £225k-rated ace (via Transfermarkt) has been utterly exceptional for Rovers since joining the club from Millwall in 2016, the club’s failure to secure promotion to the Championship earlier this month via the play-offs has cast a real doubt over his future.

Speaking to the Doncaster Free Press about the possibility of Marquis leaving the club, McCann admitted: “There’s been quite a bit of interest in John,”

“The club don’t need to sell him and John and his representatives are well aware of that.

“But on the other hand, everyone has a value and Gavin [Baldwin, chief executive] and David [Blunt, chairman] have said if a valuation is met then that helps me in terms of another couple of positions that we’re looking at.

“Obviously one of those will be in that area if John does go.

“That money will help us if he does go.

“But at the minute the valuation is not where we think it should be.”

If Rovers do indeed receive bids from a number of different clubs for the 27-year-old, it is incredibly important that they do not sell him on the cheap as doing so could lead to a season of struggle in the third tier.

With natural goal-scorers coming at a premium in the lower leagues, Donny may find it hard to replace a player who has reached double figures in each of his previous three campaigns without spending big and so they simply have to eke out as much money as possible for Marquis.
