It’s been one hell of a season for Luton Town, and no player has benefitted more than striker James Collins, who is valued at £225k (by Transfermarkt).
Named League One Player of the Season at the EFL Awards, the 28-year-old striker has been one of the Hatters stand-out players this season, scoring 22 goals in 40 league appearances for Mick Harford’s side as they sit pretty at the top of the League One table.
With promotion looking likely with five games to go, Luton will be bracing for a summer where most of their star players will be subject to offers from clubs in the Championship and Premier League, and with Collins in the prime of his career and having the season of his life, the striker is likely to be one of the players who is subject to much interest.
Although the striker is yet to be linked with a move as of yet, if Collins can add to his goal tally before the end of the season, the Irish forward will likely be targeted by some clubs in the off-season, and Luton have to ensure they keep hold of him this summer.
With Collins in the prime of his career and Luton likely heading into the Championship the strongest out of the League One sides, Harford could convince the striker to stay with the Bedfordshire-based side for another season.
Not only will Collins be given another guaranteed season of first-team football for the Hatters, if he impresses in the Championship the former Crawley Town striker could find himself in contention for an international start for Ireland, who next season will need someone to lead the line for EURO 2020 qualification.
Collins has been one of the best players in League One this season, but there’s no question that his prime years should be spent with Luton even if the striker is met with interest from clubs with bigger reputations.
