Manuel Pellegrini must start Fredericks ahead of Zabaleta

Manuel Pellegrini must start Fredericks ahead of Zabaleta

After a tough start to the season which saw West Ham face Liverpool on the opening game of the season, the Hammers finally got their first points of the season by beating Everton last weekend.

Amid a summer which saw a host of new players and former Manchester City boss Manuel Pellegrini join the club, West Ham began their huge rebuild in order to try on and improve on their poor performance last year.

Pellegrini’s job isn’t going to get much easier though as the Hammers face Chelsea this weekend and go up against a side with arguably the best player in Europe at the moment, in Eden Hazard. The Belgium international has been in scintillating form so far this year and has scored five goals to go along with two assists in the league this year. With that in mind, Manuel Pellegrini cannot risk the ageing Pablo Zabaleta and must start new man, Ryan Fredericks.

In his prime at Man City, Zabaleta was probably the best fullback in the league and will go down as one of the club’s greatest players. Now 33, the Argentinian just simply doesn’t have the legs to start against a side like Chelsea, especially considering the form the west London club is in.

While Hendricks may not be the best defender, his pace and mobility is going to be key against Hazard, moreover, his ability to burst forward could expose the space left by Hazard and an overlapping Marcus Alonso.
