Newcastle fans have been waiting for years to say goodbye to Mike Ashley. The day that the Sports Direct owner leaves the club there will be mass celebrations in Newcastle. The Magpies have fallen from low to low under his ownership, and whilst Sheikh Khaled’s money would be massive for the Geordies, Ashley’s exit is just as appealing.
The only thing that’s kept Newcastle in the Premier League for the last two seasons has been Rafa Benitez, and if he finally had an owner who knew what he was doing and was ready to make cash available then the midtable finishes that he’s secured could well have been bettered. With 7th place providing European football more often than not these days, that has to be the aim.
In previous years, Ashley would have laughed at the idea of finishing 7th as it would have meant a lot of money would need to be thrown at the club. We know, under Alan Pardew and Mike Ashley the Geordies finished 5th once, but if the Geordies are to make that level of competition a permanent thing then they will have to change the way they do things, and that starts with Mike Ashley at the very top.
Newcastle fans all know full well that the only thing holding their famous club back has been the ownership of Ashley and should he leave then the grass will almost certainly be greener. We don’t yet know if Sheikh Khaled will be pushing through with his bid and buying the club, but if he does the best thing about it all will be that St James Park will finally be rid of Ashley, his cronies and his tacky Sports Direct advertising plastered all over the ground.
