Newcastle fans know full well what Sean Longstaff is capable when he’s at the top of his game in full confidence. They all got to see it for themselves in his nine Premier League outings this season after his breakthrough and before his injury, and it’ll come as no surprise that Rafa Benitez wants to tie him down to a new contract.
The recent interest in the young midfielder from Manchester United will come as a harsh reality of what impressing in the Premier League can do for a player’s reputation. Newcastle fans will not want to lose Longstaff, so as The Daily Mirror (19;5, page 63) via HITC, claim that a new deal is on the table for the youngster, the Geordies will be delighted to be signing their six-assist youngster onto a longer deal.
They also claim that Longstaff has no intentions whatsoever of leaving St James Park and that he’ll be desperate to stay put at the club, news that will go down extremely well with the Geordie faithful. Manchester United may be an interesting prospect for the foreign imports to the Premier League, but for the North Shields-born and bred youngster, St James Park is the place to be.
Not only will staying at the Northeast club help Longstaff’s development as a player, but it will make him an icon amongst the fans who already love him. This new contract on the table will go some way to representing his new role in the squad and it looks like the future is bright for Newcastle with Longstaff in the middle of the park, so tying him down will be crucial.
Rafa Benitez knows how important Longstaff is to this Newcastle side, and whilst there has been plenty of talk of Salomon Rondon’s situation at St James Park, ensuring that Longstaff remains at the club for the foreseeable future is the most important piece of business to be attended to this summer, and everything after that can be handled in time.
