West Ham should make totally audacious swoop for Chelsea’s £22.5m-rated cult-hero

West Ham have strengthened their central defence this transfer window by signing French defender Issa Diop.

However, manager Manuel Pellegrini appears to be interested in bringing in another centre-back, despite the addition of Diop and the options he already has at the club. According to the Telegraph, West Ham have seen a £12m bid for West Brom man Craig Dawson knocked back.

The Telegraph also reports that the Baggies will only accept an offer of £20m for Dawson. If the London Stadium hierarchy have that sort of money to spend on another central defender, then the club should not only be looking elsewhere, but aiming much higher.

That’s not to say Dawson is a poor defender but, at £20m, West Ham could try their luck with a centre-back of David Luiz’s quality.

Luiz, who is valued at £22.5m by Transfermarkt, only has a year left to run on his contract and could be sold regardless of who is in charge of Chelsea by the time the Premier League kicks off again.

The Brazil international’s contract situation means his future at the club is uncertain and, if the Blues do decide to cash in, then West Ham should make a move.

Luiz would add both genuine quality and experience to West Ham’s backline. The 31-year-old’s ball-playing capabilities also makes him the ideal type of defender for the style of football Pellegrini will try to implement at the London Stadium during his tenure.

Should Chelsea come to the conclusion they no longer want Luiz, West Ham must explore the possibility of bringing in the defender.
