# Wolves: Andreas Sondergaard invited to train with first team squad

**Teenage Wolves goalkeeper Andreas Sondergaard has been promoted to train with the first team after being named in the club’s squad for the Europa League group stage.**

[Wolves Bite](https://www.wolvesbite.com/2019/09/great-dane-steps-up-to-wolves-first-team-squad/) reported that the 18-year-old has been called up by first-team manager Nuno Espirito Santo to train with the senior side under the tuition of goalkeeping coach Rui Barbosa, while continuing to play for Rob Edwards’ under-23 team.

The [Denmark underage international](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/andreas-sondergaard/profil/spieler/462820) was one of four goalkeepers included in [Wolves’ Europa League squad](https://www.uefa.com/uefaeuropaleague/season=2020/clubs/club=53357/squad/) this week, along with [Rui Patricio, John Ruddy and Harry Burgoyne](https://www.uefa.com/uefaeuropaleague/season=2020/clubs/club=53357/squad/).

Sondergaard signed for Wolves on a two-and-a-half-year deal in January 2018, as reported by [Sky Sports](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11699/11223626/wolves-confirm-andreas-sondergaard-signing-on-two-and-a-half-year-deal), and was awarded a new contract at the club when he turned 18 last January, as per [wolves.co.uk](https://www.wolves.co.uk/news/under-23/20190118-new-deal-to-sondergaard/).

He has [yet to play a competitive first-team fixture at Molineux](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/andreas-sondergaard/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/462820), although he was included in the first-team squad for their 2018/19 pre-season programme in Switzerland, as noted by [Wolves Bite](https://www.wolvesbite.com/2019/09/great-dane-steps-up-to-wolves-first-team-squad/).

In 26 appearances for the under-23 side, he has conceded just 30 goals (1.15 per game) and kept nine clean sheets (in 30% of his appearances). In last season’s Premier League 2, he let in only 20 goals in 21 games (0.95 per game) and achieved eight shutouts (38% of games). \[[via TransferMarkt.co.uk](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/andreas-sondergaard/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/462820)\]

Standing 1.89m tall, he is only marginally shorter in height than fellow Wolves goalkeepers Patricio ([1.9m](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/wolverhampton-wanderers/kader/verein/543/saison_id/2019/plus/1)), John Ruddy ([1.92m](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/wolverhampton-wanderers/kader/verein/543/saison_id/2019/plus/1)) and Harry Burgoyne ([1.93m](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/wolverhampton-wanderers/kader/verein/543/saison_id/2019/plus/1)).

A scout report by [Soccersouls](https://soccersouls.com/whos-this-17-year-old-wolves-new-signing-showing-a-lot-of-promise-all-you-need-to-know/) commended his ball-handling abilities and sharp reflexes, along with an aptitude for playing the ball out from the back with carefully executed passes, adding that he “[cuts an intimidating figure in goal](https://soccersouls.com/whos-this-17-year-old-wolves-new-signing-showing-a-lot-of-promise-all-you-need-to-know/)“.

While Sondergaard has been called up to train with the Wolves first-team squad, Nuno allowed fellow goalkeeper Will Norris to [go out on loan to Ipswich for the season](https://www.itfc.co.uk/news/2019/july/will-norris-joins-town-on-loan/).

The 26-year-old played just [eight times in two years at Molineux](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/will-norris/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/285033), although he was given a Premier League appearance last season when [coming on as a late substitute against Fulham](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/will-norris/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/285033/plus/0/saison/2018/wettbewerb/GB1/verein/543).

He has amassed [129 senior appearances in his career](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/will-norris/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/285033) but was still loaned out by Wolves, who have instead handed Sondergaard the chance of potentially playing European football this season.

That Nuno would rather include a teenage goalkeeper with [zero first-team appearances](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/andreas-sondergaard/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/462820) than a 26-year-old with 129 games under his belt is a strong show of faith in young Sondergaard, but he has deserved that recognition for his performances at under-23 level.

The 18-year-old might not feature for the first team this season, with Burgoyne having to go out on loan to [Falkirk](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/46994524) last season to get game time, and Ruddy playing only [10 times since the start of 2018/19](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/john-ruddy/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/29712), but Sondergaard’s inclusion in their Europa League group stage squad and the call-up to train with the first team offers some hope that he could feature for Nuno’s side at some point in the months ahead.
