# Wolves: Joao Gomes ‘wants’ to move to Molineux

**[Wolverhampton Wanderers](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/wolves-news/) target Joao Gomes ‘wants’ to make the move to the [Premier League](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/premier-league-news/), according to talkSPORT reporter [Alex Crook](https://twitter.com/alex_crook).**

### The Lowdown: Unexpected roadblock

The Flamengo midfielder was the subject of a [£15m](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-11634651/Wolves-agreed-15m-deal-sign-Brazilian-wonderkid-Joao-Gomes-Flamengo.html) offer from the Old Gold earlier this month which was accepted by Vitor Pereira’s side, but a roadblock appeared just as he was set to fly to England to finalise his move.

French giants Lyon entered the race for the Brazilian and tabled a proposal that was [£2.5m](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-11660139/Wolves-asked-increase-offer-15-million-Joao-Gomes-following-attempted-hijack-Lyon.html) higher than the Midlands outfit, which put a stop to the deal advancing.

The 21-year-old later [posted](https://twitter.com/GomesOficial08/status/1615386722161786893?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1615386722161786893%7Ctwgr%5E5b05f32e17d5b7678e87428f89ffbb77c667c881%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fd-18819735492792296256.ampproject.net%2F2301041800000%2Fframe.html) a thinking emoji on his social media, creating confusion surrounding his future, though a positive update has now emerged.

### The Latest: Gomes ‘wants’ to join

Taking to [Twitter](https://twitter.com/alex_crook/status/1617511422006816771?s=46&t=CgNi9SDpTTUqq0Sfamu1Fg), Crook revealed that Gomes is still favouring a move to Molineux despite Lyon’s late attempt to land him.

*“#Wolves still hoping to sign Joao Gomes. Player has made it clear this is the move he wants. Could develop in next 24 hours.”*

### The Verdict: Neves replacement?

Ruben Neves has recently been [linked](https://www.teamtalk.com/liverpool/ruben-neves-klopp-learns-transfer-fate-preparing-january-bid-wolves-midfield-star) with a Wolves exit, and should the captain depart this month, Gomes could be the perfect replacement in defensive midfield.

The [Nike-sponsored](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/joao-gomes/profil/spieler/735570) player currently ranks in the [99th](https://fbref.com/en/players/8b57ad2c/Joao-Gomes) percentile for most tackles per 90 minutes ([against other midfielders in the next 8 leagues](https://fbref.com/en/players/8b57ad2c/Joao-Gomes)) and has an [87.7%](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/403693/Show/Jo%C3%A3o-Gomes) pass success rate in the Brazilian Serie A.

Gomes has also been [hailed](https://twitter.com/ftalentscout/status/1398380985973096449?s=46&t=THym0zLtWtWzA5BIFEa9qA) a ‘warrior’ and ‘tireless runner’ by scout [Jacek Kulig](https://twitter.com/FTalentScout), so it would be an exciting coup for Julen Lopetegui should he be able to complete this move before the end of the window.
