# Wolves: Luke Hatfield expects January centre-back signing

**Wolves will make a centre-back signing in the January transfer window, according to reliable *Express & Star* journalist Luke Hatfield.**

### The Lowdown: Wolves short at centre-back

Bruno Lage’s side made it three Premier League wins in a row on Saturday, beating Aston Villa in stunning fashion as they came from 2-0 down on 80 minutes to win 3-2 in the dying seconds at Villa Park.

Despite the current positivity, Wolves are potentially short on central defensive options, particularly with their manager preferring to go with [three at the back](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/wolverhampton-wanderers/spielplandatum/verein/543), so a new signing in that position could well be required in January.

### The Latest: Hatfield predicts January signing

Speaking to [Give Me Sport](https://www.givemesport.com/1770157-molineux-transfer-news-wolves-set-to-make-quality-january-signing), Hatfield admitted that it would be a huge surprise if Lage didn’t bring in a new central defender in the next transfer window

He said: “I’m sure of it. And I will be dumbfounded if they don’t sign a centre-back, and a quality one at that in January, because they’re just so thin on the ground in that position.”

### The Verdict: Wolves could still do with added defensive cover

While Wolves do [still have some depth](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/wolverhampton-wanderers/kadernachposition/verein/543) at the back – the likes of Conor Coady, Max Kilman and Willy Boly are all currently available – Yerson Mosquera’s [long-term hamstring injury](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/58731304) means that bringing in another option could be a shrewd investment.

It would allow Lage to rotate his squad as the matches come thick and fast between January and May, at a time when injuries can potentially become a more regular occurrence.

Admittedly, when Mosquera returns there could almost be too many choices for Lage, but he could assess that situation further down the line.
