**Journalist Ryan Taylor has provided an update on [Wolverhampton Wanderers](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/wolves-news/)‘ pursuit of Sporting Lisbon midfielder Matheus Nunes.**

### The lowdown: Wolves interested in Nunes

[Heavily linked](https://www.footmercato.net/a7067028793653807886-sporting-des-clubs-de-premier-league-prets-a-miser-gros-sur-matheus-nunes) with a move to Molineux in recent weeks, the Portuguese gem has also been attracting plenty of attention from across the [Premier League](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/premier-league-news/).

Previously a [target](https://onefootball.com/en/news/man-utd-join-man-city-interest-in-sporting-cp-midfielder-matheus-nunes-35223827) for Manchester City and Manchester United, two more English top-flight clubs in Newcastle United and Everton have also [joined the pursuit](https://www.footmercato.net/a7067028793653807886-sporting-des-clubs-de-premier-league-prets-a-miser-gros-sur-matheus-nunes) of the 23-year-old recently.

As the transfer window prepares to heat up, one reliable source has now offered his insight into the current situation…

### The latest: ‘Most likely destination’

Speaking on his [YouTube](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CERDI1v9uTU) channel Taylor Talks Transfers, the Daily Express journalist has stated that Wolves are certainly in the mix to sign Nunes this summer.

He claimed that ‘talks have been opened for Nunes’, who has a release clause of £51m as Bruno Lage attempts to line up an alternative to Joao Palhinha, who now [appears](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-10925517/Fulham-agree-15m-fee-Sporting-Lisbon-midfielder-Joao-Palhinha.html) to be Fulham-bound.

Taylor added that Wolves are ‘certainly exploring a deal’ and that Molineux is currently the ‘most likely destination’ for the [eight-cap](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/matheus-nunes/nationalmannschaft/spieler/601883/verein_id/3300) Portugal international, who is represented by regular Old Gold deal-maker Jorge Mendes.

### The verdict: Make it happen

Still perennially [linked](https://www.teamtalk.com/manchester-united/transfer-news-manchester-united-ruben-neves-wolves#:~:text=Manchester%20United%20will%20step%20up,heading%20for%20the%20exit%20door.) with a move away from Molineux, Wolves remain likely to need a replacement for Ruben Neves this summer, and signing Nunes would be a superb piece of business from Lage and executive chairman Jeff Shi.

Dubbed a [‘great talent’](https://twitter.com/ZachLowy/status/1443017346172477441) by journalist Zach Lowy, the cultured Portuguese ace enjoyed a stellar 2021/22 campaign, scoring [four times](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/matheus-nunes/leistungsdaten/spieler/601883) and providing a further [five assists](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/matheus-nunes/leistungsdaten/spieler/601883) in 50 appearances for Sporting Lisbon.

During that time, Nunes also earned an impressive 6.95 average [Sofascore](https://www.sofascore.com/player/matheus-nunes/945122) rating whilst winning 6.5 duels, completing 36.5 passes and being successful with 2.5 dribbles per Primeira Liga outing. That highlights a well-rounded package which has made him such an attractive proposition for a high calibre of club.

Taking all that into account, beating the mooted competition to the capture of the [£31.5m-valued](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/matheus-nunes/marktwertverlauf/spieler/601883) sensation would be a huge statement of intent from Fosun.
