Wolverhampton Wanderers’ lack of firepower in the final third is a major ‘worry’ for Julen Lopetegui, according to Sky Sports reporter Dharmesh Sheth.

The Lowdown: Attacking injury crisis

The Old Gold have been unfortunate on the injury front this season with Sasa Kalajdzic getting sidelined upon his Premier League arrival, Raul Jimenez suffering more problems and now Diego Costa set to be ruled out after being stretchered off the pitch during the 1-0 victory over Tottenham.

Matheus Cunha is the other centre-forward available for selection but he has failed to get on the scoresheet at Molineux since putting pen to paper, so reinforcements will definitely be needed in the summer regardless of whether they maintain their top-flight status or not.

The Latest: Sheth’s comments

Speaking to GiveMeSport, Sheth maintained a positive outlook but insisted Wolves still do have a big problem up front:

"They're outside the bottom three and in 13th place. A little bit too close for comfort, but the one thing you did mention there was the firepower. That is a worry, by the looks of it.

"I was looking at the table, they've scored 19 goals in the Premier League this season, no side has scored less goals. That is going to need to change if they're definitely going to maintain their Premier League status.

"They don't concede a tremendous amount of goals, so if they can continue to keep it tight and nick the odd one-nil or two-nil here and there, they should be okay.

"There seems to be a lot of teams that are struggling a whole lot more at the bottom of the league than Wolves. So, as I'm standing here now, I would say Wolves will probably be alright and they'll stay in the league."

The Verdict: Sesko an option?

According to 90min, Wolves sent scouts to watch Red Bull Salzburg striker Benjamin Sesko last weekend ahead of a potential move, though this is likely to be more a deal that’s completed in the future.

The 6 foot 5 Slovenian would be perfect for Lopetegui having posted 12 goal contributions in 19 Bundesliga appearances this term, but he’s already got an agreement in place to join Salzburg’s sister club RB Leipzig at the end of the season.

Whether the Midlands outfit still decide to pursue a deal regardless yet remains to be seen, but it’s vitally important that Fosun dig deep to bolster their ranks with a prolific forward ahead of the 2023/24 campaign.
