Wolverhampton Wanderers have joined the race for Benfica striker Goncalo Ramos, according to reports from his native Portugal.

The Lowdown: Wolves' struggles

The Old Gold have made a very disappointing start to the Premier League season, currently lying bottom of the table having scored just eight goals in 15 games.

As such, Julen Lopetegui has identified the need for some additional attacking firepower, and they have now been linked with a move for Ramos, who has been making headlines at the World Cup in Qatar.

The Latest: Lopetegui targets Ramos

Sport Witness relayed information from Portuguese outlet Jornal de Noticias, who reported that Wolves have joined the race for the 21-year-old.

However, their hopes of a transfer could be scuppered by Benfica demanding €120m (£103m), the figure included in his release clause.

Furthermore, Lopetegui would face stiff competition for the youngster's signature, with the likes of Manchester United, Bayern Munich, Newcastle and Paris Saint-Germain all interested in the red-hot striker.

The Verdict: Get it done?

If Wolves were able to negotiate regarding the transfer fee for Ramos, with the current nine-digit sum surely beyond their price range, then the 'brilliant' forward - as dubbed by transfer expert Graeme Bailey - would be an excellent purchase.

When given the nod over Cristiano Ronaldo for national side Portugal in their World Cup round of 16 clash against Switzerland, Ramos more than delivered by scoring a hat-trick, the first and so far only one of the tournamet, while also showing his creative side by weighing in with two key passes.

With Diego Costa so far failing to deliver since arriving on a free transfer in the autumn, having yet to score in six Premier League outings for the club, Ramos - who has averaged 0.73 non-penalty goals per 90 minutes over the past year - would be a very welcome addition at Molineux, although the price is likely to be a huge obstacle to overcome.
