Wolverhampton Wanderers have now ‘moved on’ from their pursuit of free agent Jason Denayer, according to journalist Liam Keen.

The Lowdown: Contradicting reports

Bruno Lage was in the summer market for a new centre-back after losing Willy Boly to Premier League rivals Nottingham Forest, and the 27-year-old was identified as a potential replacement.

The Belgian entered talks to join the Wanderers, and even though a move failed to come to light during the window, recent reports suggested that the Old Gold were still in contact with the former Lyon gem.

Contrary to these sources though, it appears that the current transfer situation is quite the opposite…

The Latest: Wolves end Denayer pursuit

Taking to Twitter, the reliable Keen revealed that Wolves no longer want to sign Denayer, and have ‘no plan’ to bring in any further defensive reinforcements. He wrote:

“Wolves have moved on from looking at Jason Denayer. Currently no plan to use the free agent market to bring in a centre-back, particularly with the World Cup break fast approaching.”

The Verdict: Wrong decision

Leander Dendoncker made his Molineux exit alongside Boly on deadline day, and so to let two senior stars leave without bringing in an alternative is a very brave yet dangerous decision.

Denayer, hailed a ‘real asset’ by former Sunderland first-team coach Robbie Stockdale, has earned 35 caps for the Red Devils on the international stage and would have added bags of experience to the heart of the backline.

Youngsters Yerson Mosquera and Toti Gomes are currently the only other backups to Nathan Collins and Max Kilman, so there is a real lack of cover, and there could be worrying times ahead for Lage should anything happen to his senior pairing.
