Wolverhampton Wanderers goalkeeper Jose Sa has faced criticism for his role in Leeds United's equaliser on Saturday.

The lowdown

Wolves travelled to Elland Road to take on Leeds in their first Premier League fixture of the new season.

Bruno Lage's side took the lead after six minutes when Daniel Podence scored, but they were pegged back by Rodrigo's effort midway through the first half, with some journalists questioning Sa's goalkeeping.

The 29-year-old lined up between the sticks for Wolves once again after starting 37 of their 38 matches last season.

The latest

Sky Sports journalist Peter Smith called it 'a shocking bit of goalkeeping from Sa at his near post'.

Meanwhile, The Athletic's Steve Madeley wrote on Twitter that it was a 'nightmare' moment for the 'keeper, who allowed the ball to 'squirm under him'.

And Liam Keen of The Express and Star dubbed it a 'massive error' from the Portuguese.

The verdict

Sa might argue that he required more protection from his defence. Indeed, left-back Rayan Ait-Nouri surrendered possession in the moments leading to the goal before later prodding into his own net.

Keen said the manner in which he tried to dribble out was a 'mistake', while Madeley noted that his 'cheeky turn on the edge of the box' had backfired, turning over the ball 'needlessly'.

Even if you pin the blame on Ait-Nouri, though, this wasn't the only rough moment for Sa in Yorkshire.

He could have given a penalty away earlier in the half when he collided with Leeds right-back Rasmus Kristensen in the area.

Smith felt he had timed the challenge 'really badly', 'clattering' Kristensen after the ball had 'long gone'.

And Soccer Saturday pundit Clinton Morrison declared that Leeds deserved a penalty after he 'cleaned him out'.
