Wolves are keen on signing Barcelona youngster Nico Gonzalez and are the frontrunners for his signature, according to reports in Spain.

The Lowdown: Gonzalez to leave Barca?

The 20-year-old enjoyed a breakthrough season at Barca in 2021/22, making 27 appearances in La Liga and proving to be a reliable performer under Xavi.

The Catalan giants are having a busy summer in the transfer window, including trying to sign Bernardo Silva from Manchester City, and it could be that Gonzalez is allowed to leave as a result.

The midfielder has been linked with a move to Wolves in the past and now a new update is doing the rounds.

The Latest: Wolves 'most' interested

According to Sport [via Sport Witness], Wolves are still interested in Gonzalez, with Barca 'overbooking', in terms of their current midfield options.

Wanderers have shown the 'most interest' of any suitors in signing the young Spaniard, with Jorge Mendes' relationship with the club potentially standing them in good stead.

Barca apparently like the player's long-term potential, so a loan with no permanent option is most likely.

The Verdict: Great addition

Gonzalez looks like a special young talent - Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has hailed him as 'fantastic' - and we feel Wolves should be doing everything possible to convince the Catalan outfit to sell permanently.

His 90% pass completion rate in the league last season sums up his technical ability and he is only going to get even better.

Of course, there is a chance that his arrival could coincide with Ruben Neves heading the other way, but if they could sign him and keep hold of the influential Portuguese star, the midfield could be looking healthy.

Whether or not Barca are willing to sell Gonzalez permanently remains to be seen, given his talent, but there are only so many midfielders that Xavi can juggle.
