Wolves are set to offer star midfielder Ruben Neves a new contract after he stayed put this summer, renowned journalist Fabrizio Romano reports.

The Lowdown: Neves remains with Wolves

At the end of last season, it looked as though the 25-year-old was almost certain to leave Molineux, emotionally waving goodbye to the fans after the final game away to Liverpool.

Despite numerous exit links emerging throughout the summer, Neves ended up remaining at Wolves, however, acting as a huge boost for the club.

The Portuguese's current deal expires in 2024 but a new update suggests he could end up staying beyond that date.

The Latest: New deal incoming?

Taking to Twitter on Saturday morning, Romano shared Bruno Lage's comments regarding Wolves offering Neves an extension:

"Wolves will offer Ruben Neves a new contract, Bruno Lage confirms: 'We need time to sort Ruben a new contract'."

The Verdict: Massive news

Tying down Neves' long-term future could arguably be more important than any new signing that comes in for Wolves, given the influence he has had over the years.

The Portugal midfielder is a huge presence at the heart of Wanderers' midfield, dictating play, defending doggedly  - he leads the team in tackles per game in the Premier League so far this season - and chipping in with the odd long-range stunner too.

There is clearly a chance that Neves doesn't want to commit too far down the line but this is undoubtedly a positive update and the player himself will hopefully accept the offer.
