Wolves are still in discussions with Joao Moutinho over a new contract with a two-year extension, according to reliable journalist Tim Spiers.

The Lowdown: Moutinho evergreen for Wolves

The 35-year-old enjoyed another superb season for Wanderers in 2021/22, proving to be an evergreen presence with his quality and experience in the middle of the park.

Moutinho ended up starting 34 of his side's 38 Premier League matches, chipping in with two goals and one assist, not to mention averaging an 86.7% pass completion rate.

The veteran midfielder is out of contract this summer, however, leaving his Wolves future up in the air.

The Latest: Spiers drops major contract update

Taking to Twitter, Spiers provided a key update on the matter, saying Moutinho wants to be at Molineux for another two years:

"Talks remain ongoing with Joao Moutinho. Sticking point is the length of contract with the 35-year-old thought to want a two-year extension."

The Verdict: Is two years too much?

The hope is clearly that Moutinho, dubbed 'outstanding' by Alan Shearer, will sign a new deal with Wanderers, not only because of his continued quality but also because losing him and Ruben Neves in the same summer would be a huge blow.

In truth, a one-year extension would arguably make the most sense, given the Portuguese's age - he will be pushing 38 by the time he leaves if he signs a two-year deal.

That would still be a better option than losing him completely this summer, though, with his influence on and off the pitch something that is surely priceless for Bruno Lage.

In other news, Wolves are reportedly closing in on one signing. Find out who it is here.
