# Wolves likely to trigger two-year Nelson Semedo extension

**[Wolves](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/wolves-news/) are likely to trigger an option to keep right-back Nelson Semedo at the club for a further two years, according to reliable journalist Steve Madeley.**

### The Lowdown: Semedo a key player for Wolves

The 29-year-old has been a good signing for Wanderers, invariably nailing down the right-back spot and becoming an important figure under various managers.

Semedo has [started 14](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/296363/Show/N%C3%A9lson-Semedo) [Premier League](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/premier-league-news/) matches this season, and made 19 appearances overall in the competition, picking up one assist for good measure.

Wolves have an [option](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/nelson-semedo/profil/spieler/231572) to extend the Portuguese’s stay by two years and it looks though that is something that will come to fruition.

### The Latest: Two-year extension likely

According to [*The Athletic*](https://theathletic.com/4164152/2023/02/10/wolves-squad-summer-transfers/?source=emp_shared_article)‘s Madeley, Wanderers will activate Semedo’s extension, rather than losing him on a free transfer when his contract [expires](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/nelson-semedo/profil/spieler/231572) this summer:

> “Wolves are likely to activate an option to keep Semedo for a further two years, otherwise they would lose a valuable asset for free.”

### The Verdict: Correct decision

This is absolutely the right decision by Wolves, should they go through with it, with Semedo someone who should continue to be a key man for a number of years.

He has been [hailed](https://thisisfutbol.com/2021/04/blogs/premier-league/wolves/wolves-tim-spiers-offers-huge-praise-for-nelson-semedo-for-his-display-v-fulham/) as ‘unbelievable’ by journalist Tim Spiers in the past, while [124 appearances](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/nelson-semedo/alletore/spieler/231572) for Barcelona is not to be sniffed at, so Julen Lopetegui will surely value him moving forward.

Semedo shone in last weekend’s 3-0 win over Liverpool, earning a 7.24 rating from [*WhoScored*](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/296363/Show/N%C3%A9lson-Semedo), while only Ruben Neves (2.5) and Hugo Bueno (2.3) have averaged more than his [2.1](https://www.whoscored.com/Teams/161/Show/England-Wolverhampton) tackles per game in the league this season.
