Wolves: Old Gold in ‘awkward situation’ after Davis decision

Molineux Stadium, Wolverhampton, Britain - October 23, 2022. Wolverhampton Wanderers manager Steve Davis.

Wolverhampton Wanderers have created an ‘awkward’ managerial situation by deciding to keep Steve Davis in charge, according to transfer insider Dean Jones.

The Lowdown: Double blow

Following Bruno Lage’s sacking last month, Fosun were on the lookout to find his successor but were dealt setbacks when both of their preferred candidates, Julen Lopetegui and Michael Beale, rejected a move to the Premier League.

Chairman Jeff Shi later released a statement saying that Davis would remain in charge as interim manager at Molineux until 2023 at the earliest whilst the search continued.

The Latest: Jones’ comments

Speaking to GiveMeSport, Jones was surprised by the Old Gold’s decision, but insisted that the hierarchy would already be working on their new appointment.

“I was very surprised that they took the stance to publicly state that they will have an interim manager for the rest of this period of the season.

“It seems unnecessary to me because they have put themselves in an awkward situation, but I’m sure, behind the scenes, that they are planning on making a replacement.”

The Verdict: Second Lopetegui approach

Recent reports have suggested that Lopetegui is now back in talks with Wolves regarding their vacancy despite initially rejecting them, and he would be the ideal candidate to take over the reins.

The Spaniard has a remarkable track record over the course of his career, earning 221 victories, 80 draws and suffering just 67 losses out of 368 games, averaging 2.02 points per match (Transfermarkt).

Wanderers are desperately in need of a change at the helm given they are second from bottom in the table, and the 56-year-old has all the right attributes to turn it around.
