Deslandes has gone to Bulgarian top-flight club Lokomotiv Plovdiv on loan with an option for a permanent deal, while Johnson will spend the rest of the season at Kilmarnock in the Scottish Premiership. \[[via wolves.co.uk](https://www.wolves.co.uk/news/first-team/20190904-duo-head-out-on-loan/)\] ![](https://cdn.footballtransfertavern.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/THE-BREAKDOWN.png) Deslandes, who is [mainly a left-back but has also played occasionally in the centre of defence](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/sylvain-deslandes/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/272621), [came to Wolves four years ago](https://web.archive.org/web/20150906133926/http://www.wolves.co.uk/news/article/deslandes-set-to-sign-2487827.aspx) but has since made only [eight first-team appearances](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/sylvain-deslandes/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/272621). [Five of those came in his first season at Molineux](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/sylvain-deslandes/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/272621) in 2015/16, while he featured for only [26 minutes](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/sylvain-deslandes/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/272621) during their [Championship-winning 2017/18 campaign](https://www.skysports.com/championship-table/2017). The 22-year-old [France underage international](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/sylvain-deslandes/profil/spieler/272621) had a [loan spell at Bury](https://www.buryfc.co.uk/news/article/2016-17/confirmed-left-back-deslandes-arrives-from-wolves-3548768.aspx) in which he [did not play once](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/sylvain-deslandes/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/272621) and was given just [two appearances](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/sylvain-deslandes/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/272621) during another [loan at Portsmouth](https://www.wolves.co.uk/news/first-team/20180102-ronan-and-deslandes-leave-on-loan/) a couple of seasons ago. He spent last season at Spanish third-tier club Jumilla, [with whom Wolves have a professional partnership](https://www.wolves.co.uk/news/club/20180817-wolves-agree-fc-jumilla-partnership/), and made [12 appearances](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/sylvain-deslandes/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/272621) there. Centre-back Johnson has [yet to get his break for Wolves’ first team](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/connor-johnson/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/345251), although he [captained their under-23 side during the 2016/17 season](https://www.wolves.co.uk/news/under-23/20170505-meet-the-under-23s/). The 21-year-old had short-term loan spells at [Boreham Wood](https://www.borehamwoodfootballclub.co.uk/uncategorized/wood-welcome-defensive-cover/) and [AFC Telford United](https://www.shropshirestar.com/sport/football/afc-telford-united/2017/09/05/telford-sign-wolves-connor-johnson-on-one-month-loan-deal/) before a [season-long loan with Walsall](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/45375788) last season, where he made just [11 appearances in all competitions](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/connor-johnson/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/345251). A breakthrough at Wolves for either player this season seemed highly unlikely, with manager Nuno Espirito Santo generally remaining loyal to established first-team players. The [centre-back trio of Conor Coady, Ryan Bennett and Willy Boly](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/wolverhampton-wanderers/kadernachposition/verein/543) all [played 40 or more games last season](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/wolverhampton-wanderers/leistungsdaten/verein/543/plus/0?reldata=%262018) and have [started every Premier League game so far this term](https://www.whoscored.com/Teams/161/Show/England-Wolverhampton-Wanderers). Jesus Vallejo, who [joined on loan in July](https://www.wolves.co.uk/news/first-team/20190727-vallejo-joins-from-real-madrid/), has so far made just [three appearances, all in Europa League qualifying](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/jesus-vallejo/leistungsdaten/spieler/251896), while 22-year-old Max Kilman has played just [twice for the first team](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/max-kilman/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/525247). At left-back, Nuno has been content to [switch between Ruben Vinagre and Jonny](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/wolverhampton-wanderers/leistungsdaten/verein/543/plus/0?reldata=%262019), while [Kilman and Matt Doherty could be switched to that role](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/wolverhampton-wanderers/kadernachposition/verein/543) if needed. ![](https://cdn.footballtransfertavern.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/Verdict.png) With Deslandes falling out of the first-team picture over the last two years and Johnson yet to get his senior break at the club, this could be a huge season for both players as they seek to prove that they can make it at Molineux. While Nuno has tended to operate with a small squad – he only used [21 players in the Premier League last season](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/wolverhampton-wanderers/leistungsdaten/verein/543/plus/0?reldata=GB1%262018) – the manager seems to believe he has adequate cover for all defensive positions, so unless Deslandes and Johnson perform exceptionally well this term, it seems hard to envisage either of them breaking into the first team next season, either. ***Wolves fans, were the club right to loan out Deslandes and Johnson? Did they deserve a chance at Molineux this season or should they just be moved on permanently? Join in the discussion by commenting below!***
