Wolves attempted to bring Oussama Idrissi to the Molineux before the transfer window shut its doors, but he opted for a move to Europa League holders Sevilla.
Sunny Spain over Molineux move
With Diogo Jota leaving the West Midlands to join Liverpool for £41m, Nuno Espirito Santo reportedly targetted the Morocco international as his like-for-like replacement.
Will Wolves rue not signing Oussama Idrissi?
Speaking to Estadio Deportivo, Idrissi spoke of his happiness to get the opportunity to play for Sevilla and went into the reasons why he turned down “other offers”.
“I am very happy to arrive at Sevilla, a club with a lot of history,” explained Idrissi, naming Andalusian legend Jesus Navas as a personal inspiration.
“I had other offers but in the end, I did not take them into account because Sevilla is a great club, a very important club and I wanted to be with these players.
“Three years ago, I saw the magnificent atmosphere in the stadium and I haven’t stopped thinking about it since. It wasn’t difficult going to Sevilla because it was where I wanted to be.”
A big hurdle to jump
It just so happens that the team that Idrissi decided to move to, was the same side that knocked Wolves out of the Europa League. This shows the sort of challenge that Nuno has on his hands.
Of course, Los Nervionenses went on to lift the trophy for a record sixth time, so it is easy to see why the La Liga outfit was an attractive proposition for Idrissi.
Nuno will have to get Wolves to the same level to attract the players that he wants. While it is useful having individuals like Jorge Mendes fighting your corner, he can only work his magic for so long, and the club’s fantastic rise over the last couple of years needs to go even further to beat out the likes of Sevilla for transfer targets.
Wolves need silverware. Nuno’s team will be influenced by how far they got last season in Europe and if they can remain consistent this term, they may just put that feather in their cap to help bring even more quality recruits to the Midlands.
