# Ed Woodward really needs Jose Mourinho to achieve these 2 things at Man United in 2018

**Our Manchester United fans here in the Transfer Tavern will be hoping for a better start to 2018 than they finished last year.**

According to our regulars, Mourinho looked like he’d got things right at the start of the season, as the Red Devils looked to build on the successful first season under the Portuguese boss, winning the League cup and the Europa League. In doing so, becoming the first United manager to win a trophy in his first season.

He has been hugely backed in the transfer market by Ed Woodward and any barring one in the summer, he has got every one of his transfer targets. So, what’s he moaning about?

For United to be where they are at the moment, is an improvement on how things have been in recent seasons. However, they did win the FA Cup under former boss Louis Van Gaal, so surely Woodward would be looking to add to this recent trophy streak.

Our Landlord and the beer-swillers at the end of the bar have been discussing two things Mourinho needs to achieve this year…

## Champions League Football

Although United currently sit second in the league, a top-four finish will be the number one aim to keep in the Champions League and be able to keep attracting the biggest and best talent across Europe.

Although not qualifying for the Champions League in recent seasons gave United the opportunity to win a trophy they’d not won before, fans, players and the board would much prefer playing on a Wednesday night rather than a Thursday each week.

## Bringing balance to the team

United for all the quality and talent they have on the pitch, are a team that are imbalanced and need to find a rhythm within the squad to bring the type of counter-attacking football the Old Trafford faithful are used to.

Although times have moved on since the days of Sir Alex Ferguson, the United DNA still runs deep within the club and the need for exciting football to return is on top of the fans wanted list for 2018. Indeed, he needs to find the best of mixing the bustling Romelu Lukaku with his more intricate attackers in order to take the pressure off the Belgian.
