West Ham have announced the loan signing of Argentine forward Jonathan Calleri on a season long loan.

He previously spent last term in the Premiera Divison with Boca Juniors – and with being a young Argentine forward and moving form Boca Juniors to the Hammers. – you can imagine the comparisons he will get to one Carlos Tevez, a former Iron and fan favourite amongst the faithful fans of the East London club!

This transfer excites the West Ham punters here at the Transfer Tavern, and the fact that he chose to come to England as opposed to the offer from Barcelona.

The 22-year-old will hope to make the same impact as his fellow Argentine Manuel Lanzini, who joined in a similar deal last year where he joined on a season-long loan with the view to a permanent deal.

With that being said, our landlord wishes to listen to the divided punters and give both the positive and negatives of bringing the Argentine to the Olympic Stadium…

PRO – Beating Barcelona

A massive positive to making this signing is the fact that West Ham United were able to lure this young talented Argentinian, over the prospect of a move to La Liga Champions Barcelona.

This shows the intent of the club and what the club must have sat down and spoken about with him.

This should make our punters here that are Hammers very happy with this shrewd bit of business from the owners and manager a like.

CON – No experience in European football

One of the negative sides to this deal is that, yes he is proven goalscorer in the Argentine League but the standard he has come up against, isn’t at the same competitive level that he will find himself against here in the English Premier League.

As we all know having seen some players come from the continent as well as South America…it doesn’t always go to plan.

With the Hammers fans wanting a goal scoring striker was this the right option to put their money in terms of wages into? Or should they have gone for a more experienced and established striker?

PRO – Skill and class

This young athletic Argentine striker, who has been a hot topic amongst our punters here at the Tavern; has shown glimpses of pure skill and class.

So with that being said, this young, pacey and agile striker offers a different style play to those striking options already available to Bilic.

CON – Somewhat underwhelming compared to Lacazette…

With the current form of Andy Carroll, and the arrival of Ayew and now Calleri…will that mean that business is done for the Hammers and the 20 goal a season big name striker that Gold and Sullivan promised before the season. Is Calleri that guy or Ayew perhaps?
