Able to sign players once again, Chelsea are likely to be linked with hundreds of names over the course of the summer transfer window. Indeed, January may well have seen them agree a deal for £40m Hakim Ziyech but it has been well over a year since the Blues – one of the biggest teams in Europe – welcomed a new face to the club properly.
With that in mind, it’s not hard to imagine an awful lot of players being linked with a move to Stamford Bridge to join Frank Lampard’s youthful revolution. So, whether it be breaking news, opinion-led content on the latest gossip or reactions to everything Chelsea, the Football Transfer Tavern’s Chelsea rumours page has you covered.
Though the days of Roman Abramovich outspending everyone in Europe appear to have somewhat passed, it’d be silly to suggest the Blues aren’t still enjoying all the lavish presents a Russian oligarch can provide.
After all, they broke the transfer world-record for a goalkeeper in the shape of Kepa back in 2018 to the tune of £72m and also have the likes of £59m Christian Pulisic, £50m Jorginho and £40m Mateo Kovacic to choose from.
In the past, they’ve broken records before. Cast your minds back to January 2011 and remember the shock of stealing Liverpool star Fernando Torres for £50m or even further still, to 2006, when Abramovich finally brought a certain Andriy Shevchenko to SW6 for £30m, back when £30m was a lot of money…
Arguably, the club’s best ever signings came before the Abramovich era. After all, where would the Blues have been had they not splashed £11m on West Ham’s Lampard in 2001? Or helped kick in the cosmopolitan era by luring the likes of Ruud Gullit, Gianluca Vialli and Gianfranco Zola to West London in the lead up to the turn of the millennium?
That’s not to say, they’ve always got things right, however. The aforementioned Torres and Shevchenko did very little to justify their price tags in the famous blue kit – combining for just 67 goals in total – and the big-money additions of Tiemoue Bakayoko and Alvaro Morata did not work out at all.
Furthermore, the less we say about how cheaply the likes of Romelu Lukaku, Mo Salah and Kevin de Bruyne were allowed to leave the club, the better.
Over the course of the winter window, you’d have seen a lot (and we mean A LOT of strikers linked with a move to the club) and it’s not hard to imagine the same thing happening this summer.
After all, the likes of Edinson Cavani and Dries Mertens are available on frees at the time of writing, while expect links with a move for England defender Ben Chilwell to continue, considering some of the problems Lampard has endured at left-back over the course of his maiden campaign.
