Manchester United targeting Dominic Calvert-Lewin in surprise January transfer move

Manchester United could be forced to strengthen their attacking options in January after another injury setback involving Benjamin Sesko.

With Michael Carrick needing additional firepower to maintain competition for places up front, an experienced Premier League striker has reportedly emerged as a surprise target.

Leeds United forward Dominic Calvert-Lewin is among the names being considered by United’s recruitment team. However, attempting to sign a key player from one of their biggest rivals could prove extremely difficult.

Manchester United Consider Dominic Calvert-Lewin

According to The Athletic, Manchester United are exploring the January market for centre-forwards, with Calvert-Lewin one of the players under consideration.

The 29-year-old England international has reportedly been on United’s radar for some time, and recruitment staff are now assessing whether a potential transfer would be feasible when the window opens.

The interest comes amid concerns over Benjamin Sesko’s availability. The Slovenian striker is expected to miss an extended period with a shin injury, leaving Carrick with fewer recognised centre-forward options.

Calvert-Lewin has rebuilt his career since joining Leeds on a free transfer from Everton in 2025. His performances at Elland Road have attracted renewed attention, with the striker scoring 20 goals in 49 appearances for the club across all competitions.

He has also returned to England international contention following his improved form, making him an appealing option for United as they consider their attacking requirements.

However, there are significant obstacles. Leeds are reportedly keen to reward Calvert-Lewin with a new contract, despite his current agreement running until 2028. The club are also understood to be protective of a player who has become an important part of Daniel Farke’s side.

The rivalry between Leeds and Manchester United presents another major complication. A transfer between the clubs would attract considerable attention, and reports suggest the possibility of an agreement is currently remote.

What This Means for Manchester United

Calvert-Lewin could offer United a different profile in attack, bringing physical presence, aerial ability and considerable Premier League experience. His availability could become particularly important if Sesko remains sidelined into the January window.

United have previously considered alternative centre-forward options, but the latest developments could encourage the recruitment department to widen its search. Calvert-Lewin’s experience in English football would potentially make him an attractive short-term solution.

Nevertheless, Leeds are unlikely to make negotiations straightforward. They have little reason to weaken their squad midway through the campaign, particularly by allowing an important player to join their historic rivals.

United must also consider whether pursuing Calvert-Lewin is realistic when other striker targets may be easier to acquire.

For now, the reported interest represents an option under consideration rather than an imminent transfer. Sesko’s injury has increased the urgency surrounding United’s search for attacking reinforcements, but persuading Leeds to sell their striker could prove a significant challenge.
