Manchester United remain interested in signing Newcastle United defender Lewis Hall, but securing his services could prove difficult after the left-back committed his future to the Magpies.
The England international was among United’s defensive targets during the summer transfer window.
However, Newcastle refused to entertain his departure, and his new contract has strengthened their position ahead of any potential negotiations.
Despite those obstacles, United continue to view Hall as a long-term option at left-back.
Manchester United Learn Lewis Hall Price
According to Football Insider, Manchester United would likely need to pay at least £70 million to persuade Newcastle to part with the 22-year-old.
Transfer correspondent Pete O’Rourke reports that Hall remains high on United’s list of targets, with the club continuing to monitor his situation.
O’Rourke explained: “They do like Lewis Hall and see him as somebody who could come in there and become a mainstay for them at left back for the foreseeable future in that side.”
Hall has since signed a contract extension that keeps him at St James’ Park until 2031. That agreement puts Newcastle in a strong negotiating position, meaning United would likely need to make a substantial offer to have any chance of completing a deal.
Why Newcastle are Reluctant to Sell
Newcastle regard Hall as an important part of their plans and are under no immediate pressure to sell the defender.
His performances for club and country have enhanced his reputation, while his long-term contract gives the Magpies greater control over his future.
Although United have continued to track the situation, a January departure is reportedly not expected. A move next summer appears more plausible, although Newcastle’s stance could make negotiations difficult then as well.
Hall is also believed to be settled at Newcastle, so United would need both clubs to reach an agreement and the player to remain open to the switch.
Could Manchester United Return Next Summer?
United’s interest reflects their desire to strengthen at left-back and find a long-term option for the position. Hall’s age, Premier League experience and potential make him an attractive candidate.
However, a fee exceeding £70 million would represent a significant investment, particularly with Newcastle having little incentive to negotiate a sale.
United may therefore have to consider alternative targets if the Magpies refuse to lower their demands.
