Arsenal are reportedly among the clubs keeping a close eye on Monza striker Gustavo Varela, whose outstanding start to the season has attracted interest from several major European sides.
The 21-year-old Portuguese forward has emerged as one of Serie A’s most exciting attacking prospects, with his goalscoring form reportedly putting him on the radar of Arsenal, Napoli and former club Benfica.
Arsenal Face Competition for Gustavo Varela
According to Calciomercato.it, Napoli could look to make a move for Varela during the January transfer window as they assess their attacking options.
However, Arsenal are also among the clubs monitoring the striker, with the Premier League side representing a significant threat to Napoli’s plans. Benfica are another interested party after allowing Varela to leave for Monza last summer.
Varela has scored seven goals in eight Serie A appearances, placing him at the top of the league’s goalscoring standings at the time of the report. His performances have helped establish him as a player attracting attention beyond Italy.
The forward joined Monza from Benfica in the summer, and his immediate impact has made the transfer look increasingly valuable for the Italian club.
Benfica Hold Important Advantage
Although Benfica no longer have Varela under contract, they reportedly retained the right to match a future offer for the striker, alongside a 20 per cent share of any profit Monza makes from a subsequent sale.
That arrangement could complicate negotiations for Arsenal or Napoli, although it does not automatically mean Benfica will bring the player back to Portugal.
Monza also have little obvious incentive to sell midway through the season. Varela has become an important player for the club, and his continued scoring could strengthen their negotiating position ahead of future transfer windows.
Could Arsenal Make a Move?
Varela’s finishing record and strong start in Italy explain why clubs are beginning to take notice. Arsenal’s reported interest suggests he is one of the forwards being monitored, but there is no confirmation that the Gunners have made a formal offer.
Napoli could explore a January approach, while Benfica’s contractual rights give them a potential role in any future deal.
What this means for Arsenal: Varela is a name worth watching as the transfer window approaches, but any potential move will depend on Monza’s willingness to negotiate and the level of competition from Napoli and Benfica. For now, the interest remains reported rather than a confirmed transfer pursuit.
