Sunderland History

Sunderland AFC was founded on 25 September 1880 by James Allan after a meeting with his associates; however, it has been accepted that the club was instead formed in 1879, but there is very little knowledge on this. Just five clubs have won more top-flight titles than the Black Cats, who have ruled English football on an incredible six occasions.

In 1937, Sunderland also lifted the FA Cup for the first time in their history with Bob Stokoe and the Lads repeating the feat in 1973 against all odds. Sunderland are one of a few football clubs to have played their home matches at eight stadiums following their inception in 1879. It all began at Blue House Field before moves to The Grow, Horatio Street, Abbs Field and Newcastle Road, with the Black Cats eventually finding their spiritual home at Roker Park. This was the ground of the famous Roker Roar, the morning after Sunderlands FA Cup triumph over Manchester City in 1973, a ground staff member spotten a lone London-based journalist who had attended the night before.

When questioned about his whereabouts, he answered “I’ve been reporting on top-class football all my life but I’ve never heard noise like that. It’s a marvellous gimmick – where are the hidden amplifiers?”. “Amplifiers,” replied the groundsman. “There’s no bloody amplifiers here mate. What you heard last night was the Roker Roar!”

Sunderland began their rich history by winning the Division One title in 1891-92, and incredibly managed to regain their crown as champions by winning the title again in 1892-93 for a second successive year.

The Lads surpassed that feat and became the first-ever team to score 100 league goals in a season. The Black Cats claimed their FA Cup trophy in 1973, after Sunderland beat Leeds United 1-0 in the final at wembley. Ian Porterfield’s famous strike was enough to secure the win over firm-favourites.

In recent years, Sunderland enjoyed playing in the Premier League for a ten year spell; however they were sadly relegated to the Championship in 2016-17, and the following season they were relegated once again, but the League One for just the second time in their history since 1988.
