Sunderland are back in the big time.
After sealing a dramatic promotion to the Premier League for the 2025/26 season, the Black Cats haven’t wasted a moment in showing they mean business — not just to survive, but to thrive.
While they’ve lost rising star Jobe Bellingham to Tottenham, Sunderland’s summer transfer business has been nothing short of exceptional — arguably the strongest in the division so far.
They’ve secured Enzo Le Fée on a permanent deal after an impressive loan spell, smashed their transfer record to land dynamic Strasbourg midfielder Habib Diarra, and added promising prospect Noah Sadiki from Union SG.
Atlético Madrid left-back Reinildo has also arrived on a free transfer, bringing experience and class, while exciting Club Brugge winger Chemsdine Talbi became the latest addition to a squad full of youthful flair and potential.
Altogether, it’s been a statement summer at the Stadium of Light. And now, it could be capped off by a stunning return for a club legend.
Henderson Set for Sunderland Return

According to O Jogo, former Sunderland star Jordan Henderson is on the verge of a sensational return to his boyhood club — 15 years after departing for Liverpool.
Henderson, 35, is currently a free agent after reportedly tearing up his Ajax contract a year early.
The former England and Liverpool captain made over 50 appearances for the Dutch side last season, helping guide them back to European qualification after a turbulent campaign that ended with PSV clinching the Eredivisie title.
Despite interest from Nottingham Forest, Porto and Marseille, it’s now claimed the veteran midfielder is heading back to Wearside — a move that would see one of England’s most experienced, and highly decorated, midfielders return to where it all began.
Still in contention for England duty, Henderson could bring invaluable leadership, experience and steel to a newly assembled Sunderland side brimming with youth and ambition.
Could the story come full circle? If so, Sunderland’s already electric summer may be about to reach fairy-tale territory.
