Chelsea handed major boost in pursuit of £51 million La Liga star wanted by Xabi Alonso

Chelsea could be presented with an opportunity to finally sign a long-term target, with one Barcelona star’s uncertain position at the Camp Nou opening the door to a potential move to Stamford Bridge.

The Blues have previously pushed hard to sign the defender, only to see him choose Barcelona instead.

However, his situation in Catalonia has changed considerably, with his importance to Hansi Flick’s side appearing to have diminished.

That could give Chelsea another chance to make their interest count, particularly with Xabi Alonso reportedly approving a move for the experienced defender.

Chelsea Monitoring Jules Kounde Transfer Situation

According to reports from Spain, Chelsea are among five Premier League clubs monitoring Jules Kounde’s situation at Barcelona, with Arsenal also believed to be among the frontrunners for his signature.

The France international has endured a difficult beginning to the 2026/27 campaign, starting just one La Liga match and being left as an unused substitute in Barcelona’s last three league fixtures.

Joao Cancelo and Eric Garcia have been preferred ahead of him, leaving Kounde facing a fight to regain his regular place in Flick’s side.

Chelsea’s interest is nothing new. The Blues came close to signing the defender before his move to Barcelona, while they have continued to keep tabs on him in the years since. His versatility could also make him an attractive option for Alonso, given that he can operate at right-back or in a central role.

Kounde’s contract with Barcelona runs until 2030 after he signed an extension last summer, meaning the Spanish giants are under no immediate pressure to sell.

However, reports suggest the situation could change if the 27-year-old decides that his lack of regular football is no longer acceptable. Barcelona have yet to receive a formal offer and are not currently looking to sanction his departure, but that stance could soften if Kounde pushes for an exit.

The defender is reportedly valued at around €60m (£51m), which would make him an expensive addition for Chelsea.

Alonso’s reported approval could nevertheless strengthen the Blues’ position, particularly given Kounde’s experience at the highest level. He has collected three La Liga titles with Barcelona and has earned more than 50 caps for France.

Chelsea would, however, need to consider the impact of such a deal on Josh Acheampong’s development. The academy graduate has impressed under Alonso and could see his pathway blocked by the arrival of another established right-sided defender.

For now, Chelsea are simply monitoring the situation, but Kounde’s uncertain Barcelona future could give the Blues another opportunity to finally land a player they have admired for several years.
