As one of the richest teams in world football, it can sometimes be hard to really nail down a definitive hub for Manchester City transfer rumours. After all, manager Pep Guardiola is no stranger to splashing the cash – especially at the Etihad – so the 6-times champions of England are always likely to be linked with major moves.
So, here at the Football Transfer Tavern, we’ve made THIS page to keep you up to date on all things City. Whether it be breaking news, analysis on the latest gossip or social media reactions from fans around the world, we’ve got you covered.
Across summer or winter, July or January, the FTT can cut through the noise and give you the best content possible when it comes to the Sky Blues.
With their status now secure as one of the major players in European football, a major trend of City over recent years has been to top up their talent-packed existing squad under Guardiola, rather than repeat the kind of overhaul that saw them make 3 of their top 10 most expensive signings in one summer back in 2017.
Indeed, while £62m 2019 addition Rodri stands as their club-record, CIty have largely chosen to cherry-pick players they truly believe can make an impact since that summer almost three years ago now. The likes of Riyad Mahrez and Joao Cancelo help round off the top five in the club’s history, along with summer 2015 addition Kevin de Bruyne and excellent January 2018 buy, Aymeric Laporte.
While City are often involved in some of the biggest deals across any given window, their most famous transfer came long before the Guardiola era. Indeed, who can forget their blockbuster Deadline Day move for Real Madrid’s Robinho, snatched from the jaws of Chelsea?
The Brazilian infamously touched down in Manchester back in 2008 on the same day their Abu Dhabi-based takeover went through and, despite failing to live up to his £32.5m fee, proved the club had pulling power.
Two and three years later, City brought in the kind of players who’d prove iconic. Across 2010 and 2011, the likes of David Silva, Yaya Toure and Sergio Aguero would join Vincent Kompany (who’d signed before the Middle Eastern investment), forming the base that’d spur them onto 4 Premier League titles.
Bargain moves for the likes of Joe Hart and Pablo Zabaleta were also major successes but the kind of money wasted on the likes of Elaqium Mangala, Wilfried Bony, Jack Rodwell and Roque Santa Cruz isn’t worth thinking about.
Trailing Liverpool in the Premier League, it’d be foolish to bet against the Citizens backing their manager to the hilt this summer.
Given some of the problems endured at both centre-back and left-back this season, Guardiola will surely be looking to address those areas this summer and, to keep up to date with it all, visit the Football Transfer Tavern.
