Man City battle to retain “most important player” amid European interest

Man City battle to retain “most important player” amid European interest

Manchester City are on the cusp of a domestic double after winning the Carabao Cup and confirming their place in the FA Cup final later this month.

The Sky Blues will face Chelsea at Wembley Stadium and will be hoping to add further silverware to their collection amid their struggles to catch Arsenal in the Premier League title race.

With two league fixtures remaining, City are relying on the Gunners slipping up in their remaining games to stand a chance of securing their eighth Premier League title at the end of the season.

Regardless of how the title race unfolds, the summer transfer window represents huge change for the treble winners, with the departures of Bernardo Silva and John Stones already confirmed.

The club’s January business proved incredibly influential and made an instant impact on their campaign, so there will be hope that the summer can bring even more quality and experience to the blue side of Manchester.

Pep Guardiola will have to navigate the impending exits of two of his most experienced and decorated players, but the talented manager must also prepare for the possibility of other key figures moving on this summer too.

According to TEAMtalk, Manchester City defender Josko Gvardiol is on the radar of both Real Madrid and Bayern Munich this summer.

The publication claims that City are keen to negotiate a new contract for their Croatian centre-back in an attempt to avoid losing him to one of their European rivals.

However, it is also reported that both clubs have opened talks with Gvardiol’s representatives to discuss the possibility of a move away from the Etihad Stadium.

Will Man City sell Josko Gvardiol?

The 24-year-old defender has quickly established himself as one of Guardiola’s most trusted and important players since joining from RB Leipzig in 2023.

The City boss has even described Gvardiol as his “most important player” and, for that reason, it is difficult to imagine the club entertaining serious interest from Europe’s elite.

Gvardiol’s current deal does not expire until 2028, meaning City are in a strong negotiating position and under no pressure to offload the defender any time soon.

Indeed, interest from the likes of Real Madrid may be difficult for any player to ignore, but Gvardiol still has the opportunity to achieve even greater success under Guardiola over the coming years, especially if City recruit well again this summer.

With major changes already looming at the Etihad Stadium, Manchester City will be determined to avoid losing another cornerstone of Guardiola’s project.

Keeping hold of players like Gvardiol is just as important as any new signing this summer, especially as the club look to maintain their dominance both domestically and in Europe during a period of transition.
