Manchester City are expected to oversee another major squad reshuffle this summer as Pep Guardiola begins planning for the next phase of his side’s evolution.
Several players could depart the Etihad over the coming months. James Trafford, Omar Marmoush and Savinho are all facing uncertain futures due to limited opportunities, while experienced figures Bernardo Silva and John Stones have already confirmed they will move on.
Even Rodri has recently been linked with a potential return to Spain after admitting he would be open to the idea one day.
With so much possible change in midfield and across the squad, City are already exploring elite replacements — and one long-standing target has re-emerged firmly on their radar.
City Maintain Valverde Interest
According to reports in Spain from AS, Manchester City remain interested in Real Madrid midfielder Federico Valverde after previously attempting to explore a deal last summer.
The Uruguay international, once described by former Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti as “the most complete player in football,” has long been admired by Guardiola and City’s recruitment team due to his versatility, intensity and technical quality.
Although Valverde has traditionally been viewed as untouchable at the Santiago Bernabéu, recent events have reportedly cast doubt over his long-term future.
Tensions within the Real Madrid dressing room following an alleged altercation with teammate Aurélien Tchouaméni have fuelled speculation that the Spanish giants could now consider offers if the right proposal arrives.
Reports suggest Madrid may listen to bids in the region of €100m-€120m, a figure that would likely limit the race to only a handful of Europe’s wealthiest clubs.
City are understood to still hold strong admiration for the 27-year-old and could revisit their interest as they prepare for life after several senior stars. Valverde’s ability to operate centrally, out wide or even deeper in midfield makes him an ideal fit for Guardiola’s fluid system.
While no formal negotiations have begun, the fact Real Madrid may now be open to a sale has significantly changed the landscape around one of Europe’s most highly-rated midfielders.
