Manchester United could be handed a major opportunity to bring a familiar face back to Old Trafford next summer, with one former academy graduate reportedly facing an uncertain future in Serie A.
The Red Devils have already been linked with a number of midfielders as Michael Carrick looks to continue reshaping his squad.
However, a potential reunion with a player who spent more than two decades within the club’s system could now become increasingly realistic.
United made an enquiry for the midfielder during the summer window but were unable to secure a deal, and the situation could change considerably if his current club cannot agree fresh terms with him.
Man Utd Handed Scott McTominay Transfer Boost
According to FootballTransfers, Scott McTominay is increasingly likely to leave Napoli during the summer 2027 transfer window if negotiations over a new contract fail to produce an agreement.
The Scotland international is currently contracted until 2028, but Napoli are reportedly reluctant to meet his wage demands of around €8 million per year. With talks yet to reach a breakthrough, the Serie A champions could decide to cash in rather than risk losing him later on.
Napoli could reportedly accept between €25m and €30m for the midfielder, despite his current Estimated Transfer Value sitting close to €40m.
That could make McTominay an appealing option for United, who are expected to revisit their midfield plans if Bruno Fernandes leaves the club next year. The Red Devils already made an enquiry over the former academy graduate this summer and could return with a concrete proposal.
McTominay has enjoyed a remarkable spell in Italy since leaving United in 2024. He played a key role in Napoli’s Serie A title triumph during his first season, contributing 18 goals and assists across 34 league matches, before finishing 18th in the 2025 Ballon d’Or voting.
The 29-year-old has since established himself as one of Napoli’s most important players, registering 37 goal contributions in 82 appearances for the club.
A return to Manchester would therefore represent a very different proposition to the player who left Old Trafford. However, United are unlikely to have a free run at his signature, with Aston Villa also believed to be interested and Real Madrid potentially monitoring the situation.
McTominay previously insisted that he was happy in Naples, saying: “I am extremely happy here and, as far as I am concerned, I am a Napoli player.”
He added: “It is all I think about. The future is very important, and I could see myself in Napoli for a long time. I love this place. Difficulties have been minimal, my family is happy and I’m happy.”
Nevertheless, if Napoli cannot satisfy his contract demands, a summer 2027 exit could become a genuine possibility — potentially opening the door for United to bring McTominay home.
