Sunderland have been one of the busiest clubs in the Premier League this summer, working tirelessly to strengthen their squad after returning to the top flight, signing no less than 11 new signings – more than any other team in the division.

Their early efforts were rewarded with a statement 3–0 victory over West Ham on the opening day of the 2025/26 season, with the Black Cats showcasing both attacking flair and defensive solidity.

But the club’s summer business is far from over.

Manager Régis Le Bris has made it clear that Sunderland are not content to simply survive — they are aiming to compete — and another high-profile addition could soon arrive at the Stadium of Light.

According to a new report from the Northern Echo, Sunderland are on the verge of finalising a deal for Paris Saint-Germain defender Nordi Mukiele.

The 27-year-old French international, who has experience playing both as a right-back and a centre-back, spent the previous season on loan at Bayer Leverkusen. Despite limited playing time, Mukiele’s pedigree from his stints at Montpellier, RB Leipzig, and PSG makes him an attractive addition to Sunderland’s defensive lineup.

The deal is expected to be worth £12 million, with the player, described by his former Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso as a “quality” player who often plays well in big games, set to travel to Wearside to complete his medical and finalize personal terms.

If completed, the signing would provide Le Bris with both experience and flexibility at the back — crucial as Sunderland aim to solidify their defence while continuing to impress in the attacking third. The addition of Mukiele could also signal the club’s ambition to compete not just for survival, but for a mid-table or even European push, building on the momentum of their opening-day win.

With Sunderland showing no signs of slowing down in the transfer market, fans can expect more reinforcements before the window closes, as Le Bris looks to turn a promising squad into a Premier League force.
