Barcelona chasing £50 million Brighton defender as Real Madrid and Liverpool join race

Share

Barcelona are reportedly keeping a close eye on Brighton & Hove Albion defender Luka Vuskovic, with the Croatian centre-back attracting interest from several of Europe’s biggest clubs.

The 19-year-old has made a strong impression since arriving at the Amex Stadium, and his performances have reportedly placed him on Barcelona’s radar ahead of a potential transfer battle next summer.

However, the Catalan giants face competition from Real Madrid and Liverpool, while Bayern Munich and Chelsea have also been monitoring his progress.

Barcelona Chasing Luka Vuskovic

According to TEAMtalk, Barcelona have been tracking Vuskovic since last season and remain interested in securing his services.

The Croatian defender joined Brighton from Tottenham Hotspur in a deal worth up to £50 million during the summer, following an impressive loan spell with German side Hamburg.

Since moving to England, Vuskovic has established himself as a regular starter and strengthened his reputation through his aerial ability, physical presence and composure in possession.

Barcelona’s reported interest reflects their focus on identifying young defenders who could strengthen the backline for years to come. At just 19, Vuskovic has considerable room to develop further.

However, there is no indication that Barcelona have submitted a formal offer, with any concrete move reportedly more likely to take place next summer than in January.

Real Madrid and Liverpool Provide Competition

Barcelona will not have a clear path to the defender’s signature.

Real Madrid and Liverpool are also reportedly seriously interested, while Bayern Munich have followed Vuskovic since his time in Germany. Chelsea remain another potential contender as they assess their defensive options.

Liverpool’s interest is particularly notable because of uncertainty surrounding Virgil van Dijk’s long-term future, with the Dutch defender’s contract approaching its final months. Vuskovic could potentially become a long-term option at the heart of Liverpool’s defence.

Real Madrid, meanwhile, are continuing to monitor one of European football’s most promising young centre-backs.

The competition could make a future transfer expensive, especially given Brighton’s strong negotiating position.

Brighton Reluctant to Sell Their Defensive Star

Brighton have little immediate reason to part ways with Vuskovic. The club invested a reported fee of up to £50 million to bring him in from Tottenham and secured his services on a contract running until 2031.

His rapid adaptation to the Premier League has made him an important part of Fabian Hürzeler’s plans, meaning Brighton are under no obvious pressure to sell.

A significant offer could eventually test their resolve, but any interested club would need to convince Brighton that losing such a highly rated young defender is worthwhile.
