Brighton’s second campaign under Fabian Hürzeler has taken a sharp downturn.
After an encouraging start that hinted at another comfortable mid-table season, the Seagulls have managed just one Premier League win since the beginning of December.
That slump has dragged them down to 14th in the table, uncomfortably closer to the relegation places than supporters would like. Early exits from both the EFL Cup and FA Cup have only intensified frustration around the Amex, with momentum evaporating at the worst possible time.
Despite the dip, relegation remains an unlikely outcome — and with survival still expected, Brighton appear to be planning proactively for next season. One highly-rated teenage winger is firmly in their sights.
Brighton ‘Pushing’ for El Mala
According to German outlet Bild, Brighton are continuing their pursuit of 1. FC Köln winger Said El Mala after seeing an initial bid rejected.
The Seagulls’ interest in the 19-year-old is not new. They first explored a move last summer before his rapid rise this season significantly increased both his profile and valuation. Now, Brighton have stepped up their efforts, though Köln have reportedly turned down a €30 million offer.
El Mala has emerged as one of the Bundesliga’s breakout performers this term, registering seven goals and three assists while earning a call-up to the Germany national team.
His dynamic style has caught the attention of many, including Germany legend Lothar Matthäus, who labelled him a “street footballer” and warned: “If Said El Mala continues like this, he won’t be playing in Cologne for long.”
The teenager is believed to be open to a Premier League switch, and Brighton are keen to receive clarity on his future sooner rather than later. Reports suggest that a fee closer to €40 million could be enough to secure his signature — a figure that would represent a record sale for Köln.
Brighton’s aggressive pursuit of El Mala signals intent despite their turbulent season. Securing one of Germany’s most exciting young attackers would represent a statement signing and a reminder of the club’s long-term vision.
With competition likely to intensify, the Seagulls may need to move decisively if they are to land their “street footballer” this summer.
