Bournemouth chief makes ambitious Champions League vow as Chelsea circle Premier League star

Share

AFC Bournemouth are aiming to establish themselves among English football’s leading clubs, with owner Bill Foley setting ambitious targets for the south coast side as they continue their development in the Premier League and Europe.

The Cherries have made significant progress since Foley took control of the club, and their involvement in the Europa League represents another step in their growth.

However, retaining their best players could prove crucial to sustaining that momentum, with midfielder Alex Scott attracting interest from several major Premier League clubs.

Foley has now addressed both Bournemouth’s long-term ambitions and Scott’s uncertain future, making it clear that the club are determined to compete with their wealthier rivals.

Speaking to talkSPORT, Foley outlined his ambitions for Bournemouth and discussed the club’s efforts to persuade Scott to commit his future to the Cherries.

The owner believes Bournemouth can become increasingly competitive through continued investment in infrastructure, stronger leadership and improved financial resources. He also wants the club to develop into an established presence in European football.

However, retaining key players remains an important part of that strategy, particularly with Scott reportedly attracting interest from Chelsea and Liverpool.

Chelsea saw a reported £64 million offer for the midfielder rejected during the summer transfer window. Scott has also reportedly turned down contract-extension proposals from Bournemouth, increasing uncertainty over his long-term future.

Despite those concerns, Foley remains determined to keep the 23-year-old at the club.

“At this point, we’re convinced we’re the right place for Alex to be and to stay,” Foley told talkSPORT.

The Bournemouth owner also made clear that negotiations were ongoing, adding that the club would continue addressing the midfielder’s contract situation throughout the season.

Foley remains hopeful that Bournemouth’s ambitions and willingness to invest in their squad will persuade Scott to stay rather than pursue a move to a more established club.

“We haven’t given up,” he said, while acknowledging that the attraction of joining a bigger team can be difficult for ambitious young players to resist.

Foley believes Bournemouth can improve their chances of retaining their best talent by strengthening the club’s infrastructure and creating a more competitive environment for players.

He also recognises that some footballers arrive at Bournemouth expecting to use the club as a stepping stone towards a bigger move. His challenge is to convince them that the Cherries can offer a pathway to success without requiring them to leave.

Chelsea and Liverpool Could Face Difficult Transfer Battle

Scott’s contract situation is likely to attract further attention as the January transfer window approaches.

Chelsea are understood to be admirers of the midfielder after their reported summer approach failed to secure his signature. Liverpool have also been linked with him, potentially setting up competition between two clubs with ambitions of strengthening their midfield options.

Bournemouth, meanwhile, must weigh the financial benefits of a substantial offer against the sporting consequences of losing one of their most important players.

Reports have suggested the club could demand a fee of around £100 million to consider selling Scott. However, that figure should be treated as a reported valuation rather than a confirmed asking price, and Bournemouth have not announced that they intend to sell him in January.

Foley’s public comments suggest the club have not abandoned hope of agreeing a new contract. Whether that optimism translates into an agreement remains to be seen.

For Bournemouth, keeping Scott would be a significant statement of intent as they seek to establish themselves among the Premier League’s more ambitious clubs. For Chelsea and Liverpool, his availability could become one of the transfer stories to follow in the coming months.
