The Swans have not enjoyed the best start to the Premier League season, and currently sit in 17th place – well below expectations.
With just 1 win in 7 – things are not looking good for the Welsh outfit.
Expectedly, as with any bad run of form, personnel changes have been touted – with Swansea boss Francesco Guidolin a favourite amongst the punters in the Football Transfer Tavern to be the first Premier League manager to be sacked this season.
Amidst those debates, there have also been reports of a certain Mr Ryan Giggs being interested in the job – leading to a host of speculation in the Tavern over whether the Welshman would be a good fit.
With that said, here are 2 pros and 2 cons to Swansea appointing Ryan Giggs as manager…
PRO – The Sir Alex Ferguson effect
As a player Ryan Giggs worked under one of, if not the, best manager of the past 20 years in Sir Alex Ferguson at Old Trafford.
The former United boss must have had a big influence on the player in that he decided never to part ways with the club – and he went on to become a club legend.
So with that, Sir Alex will be a good mentor to look up to when the Welshman does decide to take the step up to becoming a first team manager.
You’d like to think with the grasp Ferguson had on United that he had an effect on how they would turn out as managers. Look at the likes of Bryan Robson and Steve Bruce – both very good managers at club level who both played under Fergie at United.
CON- Pulling a Neville
The fact that the former Welsh International is yet to have taken his first job as a first team manager and has only ever been a no.2 in command could put the Swans off him – and mean they look elsewhere for a more experienced boss.
The last former United player to take his first job as a no.1 without experience didn’t really work out when Gary Neville took the job at Valencia last season before being sacked.
The role might be slightly too high profile for Giggs’ first major managerial role.
PRO – Relationship with the players
Having been a former player himself, we here at the Tavern feel that he would have a perfect insight into what it takes to make it as a world-class player- having been one himself.
The former United man will have a lot of experiences as a player to look back on to hammer into the heads of the Swansea City players that could help bring success to a club that has been craving it for so long.
Moreover, the fact that he is Welsh could prove important – given his allegiance to the club in that vein.
The relationships he could forge with players will be a positive aspect if he is to be appointed.
CON – Tarnishing a Players Reputation
We have witnessed players who have played at the highest level and been world class in their time turn their hand to management – and it has often ended badly.
It has led to players being forgotten for their exploits as a player and only being remembered as poor managers.
This would be a risk for both the club and Giggs should he take the job – and then not live up to expectations from his playing days.
You wouldn’t want one of the best British players in history to go down in flames for a failed managerial career, so it is a risk but is it worth taking?
