This season really promises to be a defining one for Celtic and our resident Bhoys in the Tavern can’t wait to see the campaign unfurl.

The Bhoys have taken ten points from their opening four games as well as progression into the next round of the Betfred Cup but the icing on the cake for Brendan Rodgers’ side has to be the qualification for this season’s Champions League.

The Celtic fans in the Tavern agree and they want to see the impetus put on delivering in European football this season with high hopes placed on the progress of Rodgers’ men. The feeling is that the standard of Scottish football will not improve enough to challenge Celtic this season and so to see how good the Bhoys really are, their squad have to really pull their finger out in the European competition.

With that said, our landlord has highlighted a few mistakes that Rodgers made in the transfer window and he really feels that these needed to be addressed and also that the Celtic boss may live to regret them later on in the season.

He has outlined two mistakes that Rodgers simply now must live with at least until January.

Not signing a defender

The early season injuries to Dedryck Boyata and Erik Sviatchenko meant that Rodgers had to play Nir Bitton at centre back and with the high volume of fixtures that the Bhoys are scheduled to play this season, many in the Tavern believe that a new defender should have been a prioritised.

Ajax Cape Town’s Rivaldo Coetzee was initially meant to fit the bill but with the player failing a medical, Celtic never managed to secure another option and that may well prove to be a mistake following Kolo Toure and Efe Ambrose’s departures from the club at the end of last season.

Not securing Patrick Roberts permanently

Whilst things are rosy at Paradise with Patrick Roberts rejoining the club on loan, the Bhoys in the Tavern feel a statement should have been made with the club really breaking the bank to sign the young English winger from Manchester City.

Of course, it still may happen in the coming seasons but at a time where Brendan Rodgers is trying to build the stature of the club – securing a player like Roberts permanently would have been perfect at this moment in time.

There is no doubt that when Roberts leaves the club at the end of next season, there will be many upset Hoops in the Tavern.
