It was a slow summer for the Spurs fans in the Transfer Tavern but they were certainly the most excited bunch of Premier League fans once deadline day struck last week.
Mauricio Pochettino pulled off a couple coups on deadline day which saw Serge Aurier fly in from PSG and Fernando Llorente head to North London from Swansea to join the Lilywhites.
It is no doubt that Spurs now have the players to compete for multiple honours this season and with the club managing to hang on to the likes of Harry Kane, Dele Alli and Christian Eriksen during the transfer window, there are many in the Tavern who hope that Spurs can bring a title home before these players feel it is time to move on to bigger things should the trophies not come.
However, with the success that Spurs have had recently, many in the Tavern are frustrated that Poch didn’t go out and buy a real world class asset to make a statement in this transfer window. The Spurs fans have somewhat forgiven their manager due to the late surge in the window from the club but they still feel there will be some regrets from some of the sales this summer that may come back and bite them later on in the season.
Let’s take a look at two of them them here…
Replacing Wimmer with Sanchez and Foyth
After looking up both Davinson Sanchez and Juan Foyth on YouTube, the Spurs fans have no doubt that these two will be class defenders for their club. The main issue is that are they ready to be straight back ups to Jan Vertonghan and Toby Alderweireld should one of them go down in terms of performance?
Our landlord doesn’t believe it is that much of an issue and to get £18million for Wimmer was a good bit of business by Daniel Levy, hwoever the Spurs fans in the Tavern disagree and they would have liked the comfort of having a back up with Premier League experience still on their books.
Selling Walker to Manchester City
Whilst it was evident that Kyle Walker wanted a way out of Spurs, should Mauricio Pochettino dug his heels and tried to sell the Englishman abroad as opposed to a direct rival?
Our landlord doesn’t think that Poch could do much about this one but it hasn’t stopped the Lilywhites in the Tavern being furious that their club has strengthened a rival that will be competing alongside them for the league this season.
With that said, the arrival of Serge Aurier has softened the blow and the discussion has turned to excitement over the right back’s ability.
