Stoke City: Fans pleased to remember James Beattie

Stoke City fans have looked back at the club’s first away in the Premier League for 25 years in which James Beattie produced a sublime performance.

Struggling throughout the 2008/2009 campaign, Stoke had failed to gain an away win, but goals from Ricardo Fuller and Beattie ensured a 2-0 victory over West Bromwich Albion. The Baggies sat rock-bottom heading into the game with the Potters sitting just above, putting heavy pressure on both sides to get a result.

Fuller opened the scoring for the visitors at the Hawthorns, capitalising on an error from Shelton Martis, beating Scott Carson in the process. Indeed, Carson had a busy afternoon for the Baggies, denying Glenn Whelan shortly after but he could do little to stop James Beattie’s left-footed striker.

It proved to be a historic victory for Stoke, securing their first win in the top flight for 25 years.

Looking back at the win via the club’s official Twitter account, many fans have lauded the performance of Beattie, who would score 10 goals in 40 games for the Potters.

Leaving the club in 2010 for Scottish Premier League side Rangers, Beattie would go on to play for Blackpool, Sheffield United and Accrington Stanley, before calling time on his career.

Below are some of the fans reaction following Stoke’s official tweet:

😅 We took our time didn’t we?

A first away win in the top flight for 2⃣5⃣ years.

Just how pivotal was @1jamesbeattie that second half of the season! 🙌
