3 defenders that are perfect for Conte’s new-found Chelsea system

The Chelsea fans in the Football Transfer Tavern are loving life under their new manager…

Antonio Conte’s system change at Chelsea has ensured that they have returned to winning ways at the Bridge having won every league game since the defeat to Arsenal in September. The Italian’s new defensive unit has also seen Chelsea keep more clean sheets.

Our Chelsea regulars here at the Tavern have been celebrating their new found success, with many toasting a potential Premier League title. However, for the cynic in the room, it can’t be denied that Chelsea need more reinforcements to secure a fifth Premier League title.

Our landlord thinks that Chelsea look particularly weak on defensive depth.

Here are THREE defenders our Tavern landlord thinks would improve Antonio Conte’s new formation.

Leonardo Bonucci

The Juventus defender is widely considered by many as the world’s best defender. You would be a brave man here at the Transfer Tavern to argue otherwise as he continues to grow from strength-to-strength.

With his future unclear at the moment, Bonucci was subject from interest by Chelsea in the summer with him impressing for his national team, Italy, at Euro 2016 – who were coached by Antonio Conte.

Bonucci infamously was one of the trio that Conte installed in his back-three at both Juventus and with Italy.

Seamus Coleman

If Chelsea are looking at Premier League experience and a full-back who could slot nicely into Conte’s high tempo and high pressing game – then Seamus Coleman is more than a viable option.

The Everton defender is one of few full-backs who are capable of both attacking and defending in equal measure. Victor Moses is currently Chelsea’s wing-back, but there’s certainly room for someone with Coleman’s experience.

Virgil Van Dijk

Southampton’s Virgil Van Dijk is becoming one of the league’s best defenders. The Dutch international’s power and athleticism have ensured the Saints continue their impressive run of form lately.

Should Chelsea consider a move for Van Dijk then his flexibility would give Conte a host of options across the back line. John Terry is not getting any younger, and Van Dijk could be the long-term replacement for the Chelsea captain.
