The punters at the Football Transfer Tavern are reminiscing about the great strikers that West Ham United have had down the years.
Throughout the club’s history they have always had some great strikers to make sure that the goals are flying in and the crowd stays entertained.
However so far this season, there hasn’t been a single competitive goal from any of West Ham’s first team strikers, which is worrying for the Hammers at the bar.
Simone Zaza has been brought in and looked exciting in the game against Watford, but he hasn’t been playing week in week out for a while at Juventus so it could take him a while to get to full speed.
The transfer window has shut so there isn’t any chance of anyone coming in until January, but we can’t help but think who would be picked if strikers from years gone by could be brought in alongside West Ham’s new Italian striker.
There has been a lot of talk in the Transfer Tavern about it and the landlord has come up with THREE former West Ham strikers that Hammers fans would love to see come in to partner Simone Zaza.
Paolo Di Canio
Paolo Di Canio will be amongst any West Ham supporters’ favourite players of recent years, and would be a great partner for his fellow Italian Simone Zaza.
Di Canio scored 48 goals in 118 games during a four year spell at Upton Park, one of them being his spectacular volley against Wimbledon and he really endeared himself to the club’s fans.
The thought of Di Canio linking up with Zaza, Manuel Lanzini and Dimitri Payet through the middle is something that would delight and excite any West Ham supporter.
Dean Ashton
Simone Zaza and Dean Ashton would link up brilliantly and the Englishman’s physicality would suit Zaza’s game, and cause massive problems for Premier League defences.
Ashton wasn’t just a battering ram though, he was a brilliant finisher and even scored an overhead kick in Mark Noble’s testimonial.
During his actual playing days he didn’t manage to get as many games as he would have liked, but still scored 15 goals in 46 games.
If West Ham could have an injury free Ashton, then they would bite your hand off for it.
Tony Cottee
West Ham could do with a clinical striker and that is exactly what Tony Cottee was.
He was the type of striker that would be able to drift into the box and be in the right place at the right time, and that knack helped him on his way to bagging over 100 goals for West Ham in two spells at the club.
He and West Ham’s new striker would compliment each other well, with Zaza getting heavily involved in the general play and then going forward with the ball.
